342 Well, Duh!

Every so often I encounter a sign, a picture, or something else which strikes me as so blatantly obvious that it really should not be required to even exist for people to note the situation (or whatever) which led to it being posted due to the information involved.  I tend to respond to such things with a “Duh!”  So, I thought I might pass a few examples of them along to see if they struck others the same way.  Perhaps I’m just overly weird, or something, to find humor in such things, although I don’t THINK that’s the case.  Anyway, if others see the same sort of wacky stupidity here that I do, I’d enjoy hearing from them, if for no other reason than to be able to believe that I’m just not all that strange.  I guess, however, that if you think I’ve lost my marbles, that could provide some pleasure, at least for you, which isn’t a bad thing either!  Now, take this road sign as a “for instance.”

Yes, I KNOW that the reference here is almost certainly to a street named “A,” but it still strikes me as amusing, since it seems pretty likely that an exit ramp from the highway would lead to a street.  AND if the street was named “A,” it might be reasonable to have a sign saying that, but it still seems funny to me, so there it is!

The DOT seems to be a pretty good source of this type of image (although FAR from the only one) so, here’s another DOT “Duh!” moment, which strikes me as quite a good example of the type (at least under these circumstances).

This sort of thing does happen in a lot of places, though.  Here’s one from a zoo.

This sort of thing doesn’t just occur on signs, however.  It happens in many places.  Here’s what I think of as a pretty good example from a Dustin cartoon.

At the risk of getting too political, I think that the Non Sequitur below does satisfy the criteria for inclusion here, even if I don’t have a degree in Economics.  Just watching the news, however, seems to suggest that the cartoon MAY be funny for more than one reason.

​I DO try to avoid venturing too far into political territory in this blog, but politics does often seem to be a source of “Duh!” moments.  Here’s a thought from Shoe which brings to mind the recent emphasis on trying to rewrite the historical record to suit the desires of some political forces.  I think (hope?) that effort is doomed because too many people are aware of the actual truth of the matter, but the thought IS what counts!

Academia can provide these sorts of moments with fair frequency.  Here’s an example from Rhymes With Orange which I found amusing as it seems to try to explain why we don’t always have complete historical objects to study, so we have to do the best we can with what we can find, which MIGHT make our “discoveries” less accurate than we would like to think they are.  But, we usually don’t put it quite this bluntly.

As I have indicated previously, I’m mostly not much of a beer drinker, but this Wizard of Id strip stuck me as something which a number of beer drinkers I know might well consider to be much too obvious, and therefore a “Duh! possibility.

This Pearls Before Swine strip (below) may not be an obvious choice for inclusion in a post about “Duh!” moments, but, when I consider how many people seem to get what they think of as authentic “NEWS,” it does sort of seem to fit, somehow.  Unfortunately, Bob doesn’t seem to have developed a robust enough device to have it be able to deal with the reality of the situation.

I suspect that any guy who has ever wanted to impress a girl he likes as to how attractive he finds her would agree that THIS is a CLASSIC “Duh!” moment.  I’m not going to suggest that guys might not be sincere when they say this (at least mostly) but it does seem that it’s a pretty obvious thing to say to one’s “best” girl, and that taking advantage of such a  moment is likely to be a GOOD thing, so it might qualify for inclusion in this commentary!  (Maybe Beetle isn’t really quite as dumb as some folks think!)

​To close on a probably too “political” note, when I saw this Non Sequitur cartoon, I immediately thought of Elon’s “I don’t care, fire them all, ‘cause that’ll save money!” attitude in his actions with his DOGE dimwits a while ago.  After all, it MIGHT be that  just shutting things down so you can fire people because you don’t understand, or care about, what they do, is not always the wisest idea.  I suspect that Sisyphus would probably tend to support my suggestion, even if some people wouldn’t.

Well, I’ll probably be back in about two weeks, but you never know these days.  That’s my intention, but things CAN change….  (Is that statement another “Duh!” moment?)
